ABOUT

Utopia Publishing was founded on the belief that too much exceptional writing never finds the readers who would cherish it. Writers deserve a home shaped by people who understand the creative process from within. With deep roots in the Canadian literary community, Utopia follows a traditional publishing model with royalties and international distribution, ensuring every book we champion can reach its audience whether close to home or across the globe.

Guiding Utopia Publishing is Editorial Director Andrew Calderone, whose work as a writer, editor, teacher, and filmmaker has unfolded within some of Canada’s most dynamic creative circles. From an MFA at UBC’s School of Creative Writing to a PhD at the University of Guelph’s School of English and Creative Writing, and through the mentorship of the Humber School for Writers, Andrew has been shaped by a wide network of literary voices. His time as an editor with PRISM international and his early work for an independent Canadian press established enduring connections with writers, editors, and readers who now form the collaborative foundation of Utopia Publishing.

Utopia was built for authors because it is sustained by writers and passionate readers who believe in the power of story. Starting small, Utopia stands on the strength of the communities that shaped the collaborative team behind the press. Our mission is to bring more authors into print and help their work find its place in the world, locally, globally, and everywhere in between.

Vision

Utopia Publishing is a small, independent press based in Southern Ontario with a global vision, committed to connecting authors with the communities that shape them. We believe every great story begins with a journey, whether it moves through local streets, distant horizons, or the imagination’s terrain. Our mission is to publish fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and anthologies that explore the power of place and identity, carrying bold voices to their local audiences and into the wider world.

Behind the name

The word Utopia comes from the Greek ou (“not”) and topos (“place”) a name coined by Thomas More to describe a place that exists only in imagination. Yet its echo, eutopia—eu (“good”) and topos (“place”)—speaks to the dream of a better world. At Utopia Publishing, we live in the space between these meanings, between “no place” and “good place,” between what is and what could be. We love stories about travel both inward and outward, with place and identity at the centre, stories that transport the reader elsewhere.
